LSU Group Studies Gulf for Storm Forecasting
A team of researchers led by Dr. Nan Walker, Director of the Earth Scan Laboratory, is studying how areas of cool water in the Gulf of Mexico affect hurricane energy and how that information could be used in forecasting storm intensity in the future.
Dr. Walker's group studied the circulating eddies of cold water found near the warmer Loop Current in the Gulf to see if it offsets the effects of warmer waters that allow hurricanes to grow stronger and intensify.

Melissa's submission was titled, "Identification and incorporation of quantitative indicators of ecosystem function into single-species fishery stock assessment models and the associated biological reference points". Population dynamics involves the study of various factors, such as sports fishing mortality, growth, natural mortality and recruitment of the fish population. Melissa was one of nine students across the United States receiving a fellowship from NOAA/Sea Grant. Her major professor is Dr. Joe Powers, an Associate Professor in DOCS. (7-28-2009)
